The last of the Vernon Street triangle top shops, Hillfields, Coventry, soon to disappear as demolition contractors move in. The properties are the remains of a triangle of 67 three-storeyed houses built in the 19th century, in which the top floors were used as weavers' workshops. Shafting ran through the top storeys linking to a communal steam engine. The row of houses about to be demolished were earmarked for preservation, as an example of the tops shops era but Coventry City Council eventually decided that they could not be usefully modernised at a reasonable cost, and there are good examples of top shops at the firm of J. and J. Cash, Foleshill, which is preserved.
