Putchers which look like trumpets made of wicker, are placed in the river by hundreds and when the salmon come up the river to spawn they enter one end of the putcher and because they will not go backwards they struggle to get out of the small hole the other end and eventually drown themselves. Irene Moffatt took a trip down to Smithfield market to show the porters what a good bird should look like! She is wearing the prize winning entry in the Garment section called "Fluffy Chick" a swimsuit, hat, slippers and goggles made entirely of turkey feathers. The outfit was made by Mrs. N.
