Jan. 01, 1955 - MERCHANT SEAMEN TAKE TO MINING. The National Coal Board have recruited coming miners from among dis-satisfield merchant seamen at Liverpool. The men, who total about 60, from Liverpool and Merseyside, started their training this week at the Sandhold Training Centre, Walkden. The are brought to the Centre by bus in the morning and taken back in the afternoon. All this week they get film shows and instructions on safety.
