May 04, 1953 - British” Comet” Airliner Crashes Near Kolkata... Forty-Three Killed In Mysterious Accident. Investigators are proceeding into the mysterious crash over the weekend of a British Comet Jet Airliner.. The machine was seen to nose-dive like a ball of fire over a village - only six minutes after taking off from Dum Dum airport, Kolkata, India - on the journey to London.. There were no survivors of the Forty-three passengers and crew. Keystone Radio Photo Shows: - The tail end of the fuselage of the Comet which was found about 150 yards from the main wreckage, near Calcutta.
