MPX5157475: North East Shipwrecks - The 4,400-ton collier Duncansby Head beached in dense fog on the soft sand alongside the Groyne lighthouse at South Shields. Thousands of sightseers gathered to see the ship before it refloated under her own steam. Early morning strollers and fishermen dashed for safety when they saw the ship looming through the fog. South Tyneside Parks Superintendant Mr Jim Pearson was on the Groyne when the drama began. He said: "The pilot cutter had gone out a few minutes earlier and we heard engines throbbing so assumed the rig was there. The fog was dense, then suddenly this hugh shape loomed up in front of us and we realised it was a ship's bow," She was backed off the beach by her master and Tyne pilot in bright sunshine eight hours after running aground. 19th April, 1976 (b/w photo) / Bridgeman Images
