He was blacklisted in 1951 when he refused to testify to the HUAC. In 1953, at his second HUAC appearance he named 57 people as current or former Communists and was removed from the blacklist. His most notable films were ALL THE KINGS MEN (1949) and THE HUSTLER (1961)
