PCT4294883: A footballistic episode of the First World War (1914-1918, 14-18): an assault on football - On July 1, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, an English officer, Captain Neville of the 8th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment, gave the signal to exit the trench by throwing a football towards the Prussian guard positions enemy. British soldiers pushed this balloon and others to the German trench they conquered. The surviving English soldiers brought with them, like relics, some of these historic balloons.
