Typhoid outbreak. Aberdeen. Scotland. 1964. In 1964 there was an outbreak of typhoid in the city of Aberdeen, Scotland. The first two cases were identified on 20 May 1964; eventually over 400 cases were diagnosed and the patients were quarantined at the City Hospital in Urquhart Road, but no fatalities resulted. The outbreak was eventually traced to contaminated tinned corned beef from South America made by Fray Bentos and sold in the city's branch of the Scottish grocery chain William Low. The infected meat then contaminated a meat slicing machine within the William Low shop, leading to the spread of the disease. Pictured. Actor Phil Silvers took the bookies to the cleaners in true Sergeant Bilko fashion. The man who immortalised Bilko, the loveable American army spiv, gave a real life demonstration of how to make a fast buck at Gosforth races in Newcastle. Phil, who was starring in 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' at Newcastle's Theatre Royal, backed Record Run in the 3 o'clock race. It Stormed home at 6-5 on. But the bookie who paid out Phil, Mr Alec Lewis, was still smiling. A chat with the 63 year old star made his day - even though it was at the wrong end of a bundle of fivers. 3rd April, 1974 (b/w photo)
