ZUM4875222: Tue 03, 1953 - New Jet Bomber's speed cut by ribbons: Parachutes made of strips of ribbon are being developed by a British firm to be fitted to the tail of jet fighters and bombers and released on lending to shorten the landing run. Ribbons are claimed better than the usual bands of silk because they take the sudden opening shock load very efficiently and fold into a smaller and lighter pack. Manufacturer of the ribbon-type chute is the Irving Air Chute Co., Icknield Way, Letchworth, Hertfordshire. Picture shows the Avro delta-wing Vulcan releasing own ribbon-type parachute on landing. The medium bomber's own air brakes can be seen extended above an below the wings. The four-jet, called a” dramatic leap in British aviation” by supply Minister Duncan Sandys, is one of eight military aircraft given super priority for the R.A.F. / Bridgeman Images
