MPX5125784: Disaster struck the tiny village of Longhope on the Orkney island of Hoy when eight men from the village lost their lives in a lifeboat disaster, going to help the Liberian cargo ship Irene which had run aground on the neighbouring island of of South Ronaldshay. The ship sent out an SOS and the lifeboat was launched into the mountainous seas of Pentland Firth. MPX5125811: A piece of Alnwicks history went under the auctioneers hammer in September 1971. In this picture from our archives, auctioneers clerk Mark Marshall examines the stone statue of a soldier believed to have stood guard at Alnwick Castle for 1,000 years. The 5ft statue of a soldier wearing a plumed helmet and carrying a shield used to stand on the castle ramparts, until it was removed during alterations and taken to the front garden of Ravensmount, a house in Alnwick whose contents were being auctioned. Mark said: Its not very often you get something like this to auction.
