Disaster struck the tiny village of Longhope on the Orkney island of Hoy when eight men from the village lost their lives in a lifeboat disaster, going to help the Liberian cargo ship Irene which had run aground on the neighbouring island of of South Ronaldshay. The ship sent out an SOS and the lifeboat was launched into the mountainous seas of Pentland Firth. The cargo ship is pictured after it had run aground on the rocks, 19th March 1969 (b/w photo)

The scene at Cramlington Aerodrome as the AD1 (ADI), (G-FAAX) the first non-rigid airship built in the UK since World War One, came out for its first flight. It's progress was keenly followed by members of Newcastle Aero Club and officials of Cramlington Aerodrome. The airship was later destroyed in a storm in Belgium in 1930. 13th September, 1929 (b/w photo)
