ZUM4918686: Tue 03, 1954 - British Official Photograph (Admiralty). Crown Copyright Reserved. New Deck Landing Aid For Very Fast Aircraft.: The Admiralty, in conjunction with the Ministry of Supply, has developed a new deck landing aid for the reception of very fast aircraft. Experiments carried out some time ago indicated that the high rate of approach of future aircraftwould not allow sufficient time for the human reaction between the pilot and the” batsman” who signals him in. A light signalling system, employing a mirror and gyre mechanism for keeping it at a constant level, was accordingly devised, and trials at sea have proved so encouraging that it can be anticipated that this new invention will ultimately supersede hand signalling. The new device has a curved a mirror on gyro-operated mounting with a row of coloured lights aft. The pilot coming in keeps that blob in line with the row of coloured lights. Then he lands / Bridgeman Images
