KWE3033714: The Mask-House of a secret society, Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia. These buildings were erected in the secret enclosures of the societies, to which women and the uninitiated men were forbidden entrance. The members of the societies made the masks in the enclosures and occasionally emerged, dressed up in the masks and strange garments, and terrified all the other people of the district, who thought they were spirits.
