ZUM4918759: Tue 03, 1954 - New Deck Landing Aid For Very Fast Aircraft: The Admiralty, in conjunction with the Ministry of Supply, has developed a new deck landing aid for the reception of very fast aircraft. Experiments carried out some time ago indicated that the high rate of approach of future aircraft would not allow sufficient time for the human reactions between the pilot and the” batsman” who signals him in. A light signalling system, employing a mirror and gyre mechanism for keeping it at a constant level, was accordingly devised, and trials at sea have proven so encouraging that it can be anticipated that this new invention will ultimately supersede hand signalling / Bridgeman Images
