They are patients at the Northumberland Miners' Rehabilitation Center, at Hartford Hall, England, which in addition to the usual treatments and recreations, offers patients a model mine. Here the men are put to a final test by moving around piles of stones which substitute for the coal they will have to lift when they are back on the job.
