Nine nurses carried from 30,000 petition signatures in large white boxes each painted with the letter from the word 'Orpington' and on the reverse side each box bore a red cross. The nurses were accompanied by several Citizen Members of the Orpington Nurses and Citizens Association. Although the petition refers specifically to Orpington Hospital, it is known that a shortage of nurses is affecting many hospitals in Britain. The nurses were not agitating for more pay and less working hours, but they were calling specifically for increased nursing establishment - in other words authority to recruit more nurses.
