It was founded in 1828 in Leipzig by - book-trader Anton Philipp Reclam and after 39 years (in 1867) he gave the publishing-house its well-known importance by the foundation of the” Universal Library”, the first cheap pocket-books of the world. In 1950 the firm was placed under trusteeship by the Soviets after having dismantled the bock-binding plant and the print-press in 1946 already.
