PIX4638924: Back to the Moon: the Ares 1 rocket - Artist view - Ares 1 rocket - Artist view - Lunar program Constellation. The Ares 1 rocket carrying the module lives Orion. American project to return man to the Moon. The Ares 1 rocket is expected to take a crew to the space station in 2014 and then to the Moon in 2020. Artist's view. Ares rockets, named for the Greek god associated with Mars, will return humans to the moon and later take them to Mars and other destinations. Ares I is an inline, two-stage rocket configuration topped by the Orion crew vehicle and its launch abort system. Ares I may also deliver resources and supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), or to “” park”” payloads in orbit for retrieval by other spacecraft bound for the moon or other destinations / Bridgeman Images
PIX4639469: Mission habitee vers Mars-Vue d'artiste - Manned mission to Mars - Artist view - Fusee a nuclear propulsion. A nuclear thermal rocket fires upon arrival in the vicinity of Mars to insert the transfer vehicle into orbit. Nuclear propulsion can shorten interplanetary trip times and can reduce the mass launched from Earth. As the primary transfer propulsion system, the spaecraft's reactor would remain inactive until departure from Earth orbit / Bridgeman Images
PIX4639759: From Earth to Moon, then March -Illustration - Aurora program - Illustration - Aurora Programme is part of Europe's strategy for space, endorsed by the European Union Council of Research and the ESA Council in 2001. The objective of the Aurora is first to formulate and then to implement a European long-term plan for the robotic and human exploration of solar system, with Mars, the Moon and the asteroids as the most likely targets / Bridgeman Images
PIX4639807: Exploration of Mars-Illustration - Martian “” Motor Home”” - The exploration of Mars by men will require vehicles that can take a crew long distances and provide them with all the necessary protection against this hostile environment. A thorough human exploration of Mars would require some means for transporting explorers long distances over the martian surface while providing sustenance and protection from Mars' extremely inhospitable environment. This image suggests how such a martian “” motor home”” might be realized. Providing transportation and housing for a crew of two to four human explorers, this pressurized rover would provide stability, visibility, storage, and a means for generating power for locomotion and electrical systems. In this example, a pair of wing-like solar arrays atop the rover help to meet some of the energy needs, and the transparent windshield ports have been coated to shield the interior from ultraviolet light and provide additional visual contrast to the rust-colored landscap / Bridgeman Images
PIX4637858: La Voie lactee from one horizon to the other- Pointe du Raz - Milky way - 180* panorama - Pointe du Raz - At the end of September, at the end of the night, the horizon East presents a scattered and inclined light band: it is the zodiacal light generated by dust near the Sun located in the plane of the solar system. This glow is visible at the top of the photo. It extends to the lactee road over forty degrees high. Here, on this view of more than 180*, it is easily visible despite the glows of the city of Audierne. In overprint, the mythological forms of these constellations, extracted from the Uranographia of Hevelius. Brittany, 27 September 2008. At the end of September, at the end of the night, the East horizon is displaying a faint, fuzzy and tilted glow: it's the zodiacal light formed by the dust near the Sun along the plan of the Solar System. It extends to about 40* of elevation. In this 180* panorama, the zodiacal light is easily visible despite the glow of the city of Audierne, crossing the Milky Way. Mythological Constellations forms from “” Uranographia”” star atlas by Hevelius (1690) have been added. Brittany, 27 September 2008 / Bridgeman Images

This remarkable tree is a rare beech variety with contorted branches and trunk, the origin of which remains unknown. The Faux site has been classified nationally since 1932. It became a State Biological Reserve in 1981. Dwarf Beech (Fagus sylvatica Tortuosa Group). Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France / Bridgeman Images

A crescent moon shines through the launch site of humanity's first and only trips to another world. The rockets, gantries and spectators are long gone, leaving this slowly decaying monument to heroic dreams. Artwork / Bridgeman Images
PIX4639064: Back to the Moon: the MPCV module in lunar orbit - Artist view - The MPCV spacecraft in lunar orbit - The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) orbit around the Moon. This capsule should be able to take a crew of six astronauts to the moon and could be used to take men to Mars. The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft project currently being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. Based on specifications and tests already performed for the Orion spacecraft. It was announced by NASA on 24 May 2011. The next generation Deep Space Vehicle's (DSV) crew capsule, aka Command Module, will be similar to the Apollo Command Module in shape, however it will be somewhat larger, with enough room - depending upon the mission - for as many as 6 astronauts versus Apollo's three. The DSV would also supplement its electrical power with two arrays of solar voltaics which would aid in extending its mission endurance beyond Apollo's 14 day limit / Bridgeman Images

PIX4637908: Panorama of the Milky Way - Panorama of the Milky Way - Photographic mosaic reconstructing the entire lactee path. The shots taken between summer 2008 and summer 2009 were taken from two perfect astronomical sites, the Atacama desert for the southern hemisphere, the Caldera de Taburiente in the Canary Islands for the boreal hemisphere. This magnificent 360-degree panoramic image, covering the entire southern and northern celestial sphere, reveals the cosmic landscape that surrounds our tiny blue planet. The plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, which we see edge-on from our perspective on Earth, cuts a luminous swath across the image. From this vantage point, the general components of our spiral galaxy come clearly into view, including its disc, marbled with both dark and glowing nebulae, which harbours bright, young stars, as well as the Galaxy's central bulge and its satellite galaxies. As filming extended over several months, objects from the Solar System came and went through the star fields, with bright planets such as Venus and Jupiter / Bridgeman Images
