ZUM4924032: Apr. 04, 1954 - Ziggy the swan” A member of the family. 'S' Vacky... but Here's a swan who likes a Pinta Bitta... Who'd have a swan in the family well, for a start, Mr.And Mrs. John Lewis, who own a small general store in woodburn. Berks, would. Three years ago Mr. Lewis found a small cygnet wobbling along in the road by the local stream. He had been forsaken by his parents and the Lewis's promptly adopted him. They called him Ziggy and he soon became one of the family. Ziggy loves to sit by the fire in the sitting room, he loves coffee and mashed potatoes, and, would you believe it, takes an occasional trip to the local and gets pie eyed on a pint of bitter. It took many months to persuade him to go into the water, and for a long time Mrs. Lewis had to wash him every day in the kitchen sink. Now he will take a short paddle but only if Mr. Lewis goes with him, Although he is mute, Ziggy makes a first class watch dog (?) if intruders disturb the house hold he simply stamps his feet and hisses loudly... One over the eight and Ziggy's out for the count / Bridgeman Images

ZUM4924258: Apr. 04, 1954 - Westminster Abbey restoration: Details were released today of the work that has been started and of future plans for the restoration of Westminster Abbey, following the successful appeal for funds for that purpose during Coronation year. During the past few weeks elaborate scaffolding has been erected 100 feet up on the South Side of the Nave and of the West Side of the South Transport. For the first time in history of the Abbey an electric hoist has been installed for raising and lowering stone. Masons are demolishing the two massive parapets at the roof level, involving the removal of hundreds of tons of stone. These two parapets on the south of the Nave (over 200 ft. long) and the west transport were rapidly becoming dangerous. The parapet of the south transept had fractured; as a result a large portion of it leant inwards and has only been held by wooden shores from collapsing and crashing on the roof. In the case of both parapets the stone has crumbled and perished, large pieces falling away. The only solution is to renew the whole of the stonework / Bridgeman Images
