EVB2944616: A Japanese bomb explodes on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, Aug. 24, 1942. Engaged in the 'Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands', aircraft carrier guarded seaborne communication lines in support of the U.S. invasion of Guadalcanal. Enterprise returned to Pearl Harbor for repairs and was back in action in Oct. 1942. 77 crew were killed in the action, including the photographer of this picture / Bridgeman Images
