ZUM4842056: May 05, 1953 - Ship with 507 aboard cut in two in crash: The British Railways steamer, Duke of York (4190 tons) with 437 passengers and 70 crew, was cut in two in collision with the American cargo ship Haiti Victory (7607 tons) in the North Sea, 40 miles east of Harwich, early this morning. After the collision, the Haiti Victory drew a longside the Duke of York and took off most of her passengers and some of her crew, and took her in two. ZUM4842197: May 05, 1953 - Hanomag builds air-port tractors for Netherlands:” Hanomag” succeeded as the first firm in the world to construct a tractor for air-ports making no jerks. Many tractors could not be used on air-ports as they all did not master this problem that great planes must be dragged without any jerks. The front-wheels of great planes are really excellent springs but they are very easily damaged by drawing and pressure. The Royal Dutch Air Lines (KLM) ordered these tractors with the” Hanomag”. The tractor has a power of 55HP and is working with a hydraulic voice-turbo clutch enabling the driving on without jerks.
