MPX5153192: A Hawker Siddleley Harrier GR 1 (Jump Jet), the world's first fixed wing vertical / short take off and landing close support aircraft, landed at St Panras, London, in preparation for the start of the Transatlantic Air Race. Another Harrier would take off from New York in the race. It would be the first time that fixed-wing jet aircraft had operated from the hearts of any city centre. The London-New York leg of the race of over 3000 miles was flown by squadron leader Tom Lecky-Thompson, aged 34. MPX5153510: Mrs Sterry and her two children visit Mr Sterry, who works as an assistant crew cook on the "Bloemfontain Castle" motor vessel. Mrs Sterry asked the Daily Mirror to photograph her husband with the ship in the background, as he was due to be transferred when the ship was sold to the Greeks. The Daily Mirror went one better and invited the whole family to visit the ship and toy fair at Kensington High Street.
