May 16, 1953 - During maneuvers, an American jet fighter, F-89, collided with a transport vehicle, G-82. At least five people were killed, and police, Red Cross, and firemen assisted at the scene. American MPs arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. The pilot of the jet fighter lost both of his legs. Pictured is the unlucky crash site in Helmsbach.
