But it was hr own determination, confidence, independence, and shrewd business sense which made the trip possible. Valerie went to Canada four years ago from her home in Bournemouth, with her mother, father, and young brother. Her fare was ~ 99, and she earned every penny of it herself, baby sitting, and working a newspaper round, plus enough pocket money for her three-month. Here was determination. She brought with her one small suitcase and an airline handbag carrying only two changes of clothes for her stay. Her father, head store-keeper for Toronto firm, will send a monthly allowance.
