MPX5064437: Four paratroopers lie in a trench covering companions as they enter the hardcore Republican section of the Ardoyne in Belfast at dawn. Continuous machine-gun and light firearms firing had come from this section of the estate all night. So at dawn when the paras began their clear up operation, four of their men carefull kept watch over them. They were watching for movement on roof tops where possible snipers might still be in hiding. Earlier less than 500 yards away a machine gunner had opened fire on Protestants fleeing from their burning homes in Farringdon Gardens. February 1971 71-7428-002 / Bridgeman Images
