They came to the rescue of matron Miss Queenie Graham after only two nurses turned up for duty. Most of her staff of 31 were victims of the flu epidemic which has hit Merseyside. But willing hands were ready when the call went out for helpers. Nearly 50 offers flooded the switchboard at the 50 bed Sir Alfred Jones Memorial Hospital, at Garston, Liverpool. As well as displaying students 'arts and crafts' the Drama class gave a lively panto which would have been a credit to the West-end stage. MPX5088706: The men who built and will control the airship R101, seen here at the Royal Airship Works Cardington, Bedfordshire. l-r Flight-Officer Maurice H. Steff , Noel Graboswky-Atherstone (Lt Cdr.), Herbert C Irwin, Flight Lieutenant, (Captain of R101), Lt Col Vincent Richmond, Major George.H.Scott Assistant Director of Airship Development, Mr DSD Collins, Mr B Fitzgerald, Lt S Nixon and Commander W.H Watt. They are pictured before one of the early trial flights in October 1929. After extensive modifications on the evening of 4th October 1930 the R101 left Cardington. She carried 42 crew, 6 officials and 6 passengers. A crowd of over 3,000 came to watch the departure. The start of the journey did not go wells; ballast had to be dumped to compensate for over loading, strong winds were encountered and the aft engines broke down. At approximately 2 am the R101 passed over Beauvais, a French city to the north-west of Paris. Already flying at very low altitude she went into a dive and despite all the efforts of the crew she crashed just south of the city.
