MPX5080143: Animals Big cats. When Lucifer the 10 year old male puma at Chessington Zoo developed a slight limp, the Animal Superintendent, suspected ingrowing claws. Here is the latest method used to arrest and perform an operation on a wild animal without it being completely made unconscious. An anaesthetised dart is fired from an air pistol or in the case of long distances, a rifle, and the anaesthetic tranquilises and sedates the wild animal without necessarily rendering it completely unconscious, and without unnecessary suffering. Supt. Eddie Orbell checks his watch on the time the drug is taking effect. December 1969 / Bridgeman Images

Mr. Morwood, from his studies at the zoo, is producing the sculptored models in his studio, and Mr. Sebel has worked through many long nights devising the mechanism, to give the natural movements to the animals.
