HIM5263317: Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener de Khartoum (1850-1916). Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, British soldier, early 20th century. Lord Kitchener (1850-1916) regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Kitchener drowned when HMS 'Hampshire', carrying him to Russia, was sunk by a German mine in the North Atlantic in 1916. Lantern slide. / Bridgeman Images
