Spanish military order established in 1176, originally called the Knights of Saint Julian of the Poirier, after the name of a hermit of the Salamanca region, the order was recognized by Pope Celestin III (ne Giacinto di Pietro di Bobone, 1106-1198, elected pope in 1191) in 1197. they obey the rules and the Cistercian dress, wearing a white coat, with a cross Scarlate. The Knights of Alcantara acquire many castles and possessions, mostly at the expense of Muslims. They amassed a great fortune in war and in pious donations. Hand-coloured copper engraving, in “Images historiques des costumes des principaux peuples de l'Antiquite et du Middle Ages” by Robert Von Spalart, published in 1796.
