MPX5081319: It is the very latest in homes for lost, unwanted and cruelly treated moggies who now lap up their milk in this lap of luxury, designed by animal lover Dr. Margaret Young who founded the Wood Green Animal Shelter at Heydon, Cambridgeshire. There are 47 cat chalets in the town ranging from £25 single dwellings with all mod cons for cats to £35 gaily-painted two-storey self-contained maisonettes. If the maisonette dwellers feel like having a cat-nap together, there's a hole inside between the two floors to allow neighbours to meet in each other's cat flat. And down the street there are fine, centrally-heated club-houses where the cat community can gather for a back-chat. More amazing still, there are 'restaurants' - open-sided huts with deep shelving where in wet weather Catsville folk meet to dine in comfort. September 1961 / Bridgeman Images
