A Norman king on horseback (155), wearing a gold crown, and above all red. The predominantly military, certainly of Norman origin, was not commonly used until the mid-12th century. This clothing was probably a marker of the rank of the one who was wearing it in the 11th and 12th century drawings. The knitted hood was part of the armor. The Norman Monk (156) wears a dress of a religious order different from that of the Capuchins. Copper engraving hand-coloured, in “Images historiques des costumes des principaux peoples de l'Antiquite et du Middle Ages” by Robert Von Spalart, published in 1796.
