MPX5068008: Introducing. The switched-on Roadman '64. When roadsweeper Dave Price started work on Tuesday (20-10-64), he strolled round the streets - with a vacuum cleaner. For 46-year-old Mr. Price is really "switched on." He is one of six sweepers of the new generation who swapped their brushes and shovels on Tuesday for gleaming new status symbols. The cleansing department at Salford, Lanos., bought the six American-built suction machines which are powered by small petrol engines. / Bridgeman Images

That's a problem being faced by many British parents now that mechanical toys are appearing on the market again - for the first time in six years. British kids of six, or under, have never known what it is to have a regular, brand- new toy, and you can never be quite sure how they'll take to innovations! Here you see one youngster's typical reaction. The mechanical dog is "Wakouwa", who can obey all commands just as soon as asked.
