MPX5067774: Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, died at Kensington Palace in London on Saturday 3rd. January, aged 97. She was born on February 25th. 1883, a grandchild of Queen Victoria. She married Queen Mary's youngest brother, Prince Alexander of Teck, in 1904, and accompanied him later to Canada during the last war when he, as Lord Athlone, became Governor-General. A quiet, reserved lady brought up in the strict traditions of royal life, Princess Alice was nevertheless a popular figure toward the end of her life in London, where she would occasionally be seen on a bus or shopping. Her husband died in 1957 and as one of her children died in infancy and her only son, Lord Tremanton, died in a car accident, Princess Alice is survived by her daughter Lady May Abel Smith.
