(1917-1992)<br> Sidney Robert Nolan was born in Melbourne and became one of Australia’s finest and best known artists. Nolan studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1934 and 1936 and later with Atelier 17 in Paris. He exhibited annually with the Contemporary Art Society and in 1948 exhibited at UNESCO in Paris. <br> <br> Nolan’s life broadened considerably with his work as a designer for ballet and theatre, illustrations for books by Patrick White, Alan Moorhead, Colin McInnes and George Johnston, and as an arts adviser.<br>
