Biography
William Orpen was an Irish painter born in 1878. He studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Orpen became a successful portrait painter, known for his ability to capture the personality of his subjects. He was also a war artist during World War I, and his paintings of the war were highly regarded. Orpen was a member of the Royal Academy and was knighted in 1918. He was also a founding member of the New English Art Club. Orpen died in 1931 at the age of 53. His work is held in many public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Ireland.
