Michelangelo Buonarroti (b. 1475 d. 1564), simply known as Michelangelo, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet during the High Renaissance. He was born in Florence, where he began many projects, but was summoned to Rome to work on a sculpted tomb for Pope Julius II. He also painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling. He was inspired by models of classical antiquity and his work has maintained a lasting influence on the Western art world.
