Winslow Homer (b.1836 d.1910) was an American landscape painter known for his marine subjects. Born in Boston, Winslow settled in New York in 1859. His early work explores the impact of the Civil War and the lives of the formerly enslaved African Americans after the abolition. Later Winslow travelled to France and England where his subject moved to focus on the ocean. He concentrated on the beauty and force of the sea exploring the fragility of human life versus the timelessness of nature.
