Biography
Frederic Leighton (b.1830 d.1896) was one of the most successful British artists of the Victorian age. His painting Cimabue’s Madonna, shown at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1855 was bought by Queen Victoria. He depicted historical, biblical and classical subject matter in an academic style. In 1878 Leighton was made president of the Royal Academy. He was also the first English artist to become a baron.
