Following war service in India William Cooper embarked on a successful career as a schoolmaster at Sherborne, maintaining his artistic career and initially specialising in collage and mixed media. A series of London scenes from this period has been widely acclaimed and reproduced.
In 1973 he had his first solo show at the Drian Gallery, and was also elected to the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol. He was elected to the council in 1991 and served as Artist Chairman of the Academy from 1993 to 1998. Since retiring he paints full time, working in both oils and acrylic. The Cornish landscape and particularly the St. Ives school have been strong influences.
