Caspar David Friedrich (b. 1774 d. 1840) was a German romantic landscape painter of the 19th century. He is widely regarded as the most significant German artist of his generation. He is renowned for his mid-period allegorical landscapes. These works often feature figures in contemplation set against morning or night skies, swirling mists, trees and foliage or Gothic ruins.
