Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom was a Dutch painter and cartographer born in Haarlem in 1566. He was the son of a sea captain and grew up with a fascination for the sea and ships. Vroom became a skilled painter of marine scenes and landscapes, and his works often depicted ships in battle or at sea. He was also a cartographer and created maps of the Dutch coast and the Mediterranean. Vroom was a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke and worked closely with other Dutch artists of his time, including Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem. He died in Haarlem in 1640 at the age of 74. Vroom's works can be found in museums and galleries around the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
