Samuel Luke Fildes was a British painter and illustrator born in Liverpool in 1844. He studied at the Warrington School of Art and the Royal Academy in London. Fildes became known for his social realist paintings, which depicted the lives of the working class in Victorian England. His most famous work, "The Doctor," was a tribute to his friend, Sir William Jenner, and depicted a physician attending to a sick child. The painting was widely reproduced and became an iconic image of the medical profession. Fildes was also a successful illustrator, working for publications such as The Graphic and Punch. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1887 and was knighted in 1906. Fildes died in 1927 at the age of 83.
