Johannes Vermeer (b. 1632 d. 1675), better known as Jan Vermeer, was a Dutch Baroque period painter. His specialism was domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is renowned for his iconic piece, Girl with a Pearl Earring. He was not well known in his lifetime and remained relatively obscure until the end of the nineteenth century.
