August Macke (b.1887 d.1914) was a German painter. Macke travelled to Paris in 1907 where he was influenced by the Impressionists. He became one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Macke focused primarily on human subjects unlike Marc and Wassily Kandinsky who founded the group. Their influence however can be seen in the bright patches of colour in Macke’s work. His work is about expressing emotions and he achieves this by distorting colour and form.
