Biography
Sebastian Munster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and scholar who lived from 1489 to 1552. He was born in Ingelheim, near Mainz, and studied at the University of Heidelberg. Munster was a prolific writer and published numerous works on geography, history, and theology. He is best known for his Cosmographia, a comprehensive description of the world that was published in 1544. The book contained detailed maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as descriptions of the customs, religions, and natural resources of each region. Munster's maps were highly accurate for their time and were widely used by explorers and navigators. Munster was also a skilled artist and illustrated many of his own works. He died in Basel, Switzerland, in 1552.
