Biography
Born in Wales, Robert Marsh moved to New Zealand with his family and attended Westlake Boys High School in Auckland where his art teacher was Dugald Page. He then went on to obtain a DFA from Elam School of Art, Auckland University. He furthered his studies at the Royal College of Art in London where he achieved an MA in Painting and has worked as a professional fine artist every since. Among Robert’s inspirational tutors at Elam were Colin McCahon, Greer Twiss, Garth Tapper.
Robert Marsh’s work is in public and private collections worldwide. His works are figurative but penetrate deeper than the flesh and fabric, into the vulnerability and mystery of life itself. A British art critic has described Marsh as ‘accomplished a painter as you are likely to find’. (Peter Davies. January 1999)
McClelland Galleries is honoured to host Robert Marsh’s first solo exhibition in New Zealand since he left for the UK twenty years ago. Several of these works were prepared for an exhibition with RKS Gallery which was cancelled with the onset of Rodney Kirk Smith’s tragic illness.
