Fresco is Italian for "fresh" and artist Joy Baer specializes in this technique of painting with fresh earth minerals, fresh water and fresh plaster. All this freshness creates carbonization resulting in an enduring chemical bond that can last for centuries.
Originally from Overland Park, Kansas, Joy now lives in Pompeii, Italy, where she teaches fresco workshops. Learning from the variety of historical frescoes still intact, she expands the fresco process by painting on stone, marble dust incorporated in canvas, marble slabs, ceramics, cement and even cave walls.
Joy is passionate about the ancient medium and tries to utilize all of its symbolic and communicative properties instilling each work with meaning.
