b.1942 John Bellany's highly charged expressions of a personal iconography with the sea as its almost constant backdrop, established him back in the 1960s as an artist who was striving to express universal themes from a Scottish perspective. Bellany has produced variations on woman-plus-fish/bird-plus-sea pictures for the best part of three decades. He also has produced nostalgic scenes of the fisherman disappearing way of life with cascades of impacting colours spread over large canvases.
