Jan van Eyck (b.1390 d.1441) was a Flemish painter credited for perfecting the newly developed technique of oil painting. He painted many religious commissions and portraits of Burgundian nobles. From 1425 he worked in Bruges and Lille as a painter to the Duke of Burgundy. Most well known for the Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and the Arnolfini Portrait (1434). Jan van Eyck's work is naturalistic and he often used disguised religious symbols in his work.
