Biography
William Hogarth FRSA (b. 1697 d. 1764) was an important English painter, engraver, pictorial satirist, social critic, editorial cartoonist and writer. He is known for his series of paintings of 'modern moral subjects', which were sold as engravings within subscriptions. Although initially sceptical, he eventually succumbed to French influence to develop his style. In 1753, he published a piece titled 'Analysis of Beauty', in which he emphasised the significance of the serpentine line.
